Solutions for Fading Surgical Scars

scar reduction before and afterWhen you want to look your best, cosmetic surgery can often provide you with the answers you’re looking for.  Whether you want to undergo a face lift or a tummy tuck, aesthetic procedures can help lift your self-esteem and give you a newfound sense of confidence – and you don’t want that to be dragged down by self-consciousness over your surgical scars.

Nia Banks, M.D. is a board-certified plastic surgeon at Beaux Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery in Lanham, MD (also serving the greater Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC areas).  Dr. Banks is pleased to announce several diverse and effective treatment solutions for fading surgical scars, which can be implemented almost immediately after undergoing a procedure.  Take a look at just a few of the solutions for fading scars at Beaux Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery:

  • treat scars washington dcScar massage: This promotes fluid drainage around the scar, which can minimize unpleasant swelling.  A massage can also keep the skin around the scar much more flexible, which is essential for preventing the scar from becoming too firm and limiting a patient’s movements. The pressure from the massage can also help stimulate collagen production, which helps replace damaged scar tissue with healthy new skin.
  • Silicone sheeting: This topical treatment is available over-the-counter, and can be effective at fading the look of old scars while preventing the formation of new ones.  Wearing silicone sheeting after a surgical procedure is recommended, especially when surgical marks can’t be hidden by hairlines.
  • Steroid injections:  Steroids can be injected directly into the scar tissue to help reduce any swelling and itching that might result.  These injections have been shown to reduce the size of the scar, which is desirable for patients with large surgical scars from procedures like traditional liposuction.
  • Laser skin resurfacing:  This is perhaps one of the most effective scar treatments, and for good reason: it’s non-invasive, requires minimal downtime, and produces fantastic results.  For this laser scar revision procedure, Dr. Banks uses both IPL and 1540nm fractional resurfacing lasers, both of which help eliminate scarred tissue and replace it with healthy new skin.

No matter how large or severe your surgical scar, Dr. Banks can utilize one of many effective scar treatments to help minimize and even eliminate this common skin woe.  Visit Dr. Banks at Beaux Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery in Lanham, MD for a surgical scar treatment consultation.
