What is a Tummy Tuck?

Many women find that they have stubborn areas of fat that remain despite healthy habits. If you have lost a lot of weight, you may find that you have extra skin that will not go away. Women that have been pregnant may find that they have excess abdominal skin and stretched out abdominal muscles (a condition called rectus diastasis). Unfortunately, neither of these improves much with exercise. A tummy tuck, or an abdominoplasty, is a procedure that surgically removes excess skin and fat.

How is a Tummy Tuck Performed?

During your tummy tuck procedure, the entire abdominal wall is lifted, pulled-down and re-draped to maximize the amount of skin removed. The lining (fascia) of the abdominal wall muscles is plicated, or tightened. A full abdominoplasty will take care of excess skin and tighten the abdominal wall above and below the belly button. This helps to flatten the tummy and redefine the waist.

How Do I Know if a Tummy Tuck is Right for Me?

If you have hanging, excess skin from your belly following weight loss, pregnancy or simply aging, you may be a perfect candidate for a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck is not meant for weight loss, however. You will see best results if you are at your optimal weight before your surgery.

What Type of Post-Operative Tummy Tuck Care Can I Expect?

Most of our patients see full recovery in about two weeks following their tummy tuck surgery. You will have drainage tubes that will be removed after one to two weeks. An abdominal binder will also be provided to support your new tummy as you are healing. Try to avoid any strenuous activity during this healing phase.
