Beware: The Danger of Buttocks Injections

For many women, the prospect of achieving round buttocks is a tempting one – that’s why Brazilian butt lifts and implant treatments are steadily on the rise.  These women undergo buttocks injections with dreams of backsides that rival those of Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez.

Yet many of these women may not realize that they’re putting themselves in danger – with fatal results.

In June 2015, a young woman from Maryland died after undergoing a dangerous procedure in a basement in Queens. This procedure was advertised to enhance her buttocks.  After the procedure, the young woman had difficulty breathing and her mother had to perform CPR. The person performing the procedure was not a physician and the materials used where know to be unsafe for injection.

By the time the ambulance arrived and took her to the hospital, it was too late: the woman had died.[1]

While it’s true that many cosmetic surgeries come with their own risks, it’s important for patients to ensure that they’re working with a licensed and board-certified doctor they can trust.  Cases like what happened in Queens can occur when patients overlook the research process – usually in response to a too-good-to-be-true deal or the promise of fantastic results for a rock-bottom price. In the aforementioned example, the procedure was not only not performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon, the injector was not even a physician!

To ensure you’re working with the right professional, here’s a checklist for finding a plastic surgeon who can perform a butt lift safely and effectively:

  • Find a plastic surgeon who is board certified by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Many doctors claim to be board-certified, but these organizations are the only ones recognized for having rigorous requirements.
  • Work with a cosmetic surgeon who has experience with your desired procedure. The more experienced the surgeon, the more likely it is that you’ll undergo your procedure without complications.
  • Find a plastic surgeon who doesn’t work with implants. At Beaux Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery and Glenn Dale, Maryland, Dr. Nia Banks uses the Brazilian butt lift technique to achieve volume.  This technique uses fat deposits from the patient’s stomach or hips, which are injected into the buttocks for natural-looking volume.  Since the patient’s own fat is being used, there’s no risk of rejection.
  • The injection of silicone is not only not approved by the FDA, it’s illegal. Free silicone should NEVER be injected.

When it comes to your body, remember – you don’t want to go as cheap as possible.  You deserve a board-certified, licensed, and experienced plastic surgeon who will treat you like a patient, not just a procedure. Make sure you educate yourself through research on this procedure.
