Medical plastic surgery usually involves the reconstruction of damaged or defective body shape, while aesthetic surgery almost always involves improving the patient’s looks and, consequently, the patient’s perception of their body image.

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, or breast implants, is a predictable and reliable way to make the breasts larger. Breast augmentation or enhancement with breast implants has been performed safely since the 1960s. Some women seek breast augmentation to make their breasts larger. Others may find that, after having children or as they have gotten older, they have lost fullness in their breasts and would like to replace it.

No matter what the reason, breast augmentation may be the solution. Take a look at some breast augmentation before and after pictures to make sure that this procedure is something that you want. If you have any other questions, or if you’d like to discuss breast augmentation prices, please give us a call today.

How is Breast Augmentation Performed?

A breast augmentation adds volume to the breasts, making them fuller and more round. The implants can be placed underneath the pectoralis/chest muscle or just behind the breast and can be either saline implants or silicone implants. Both are safe. For very thin women, it is usually best to place the implant behind the pectoralis muscle to provide more coverage for the implant.

Women who exercise a lot using their chest muscles may not want the muscle over the implant and may choose a subglandular pocket. A subglandular augmentation, placing an implant just behind the breast gland (in front of the pectoralis muscle instead of submuscular), keeps the implant hidden behind the breast mound even if your breasts are a little low on your chest. This can give a very natural appearance, as see in our breast augmentation before and after pictures.

In order to place the breast implant, an incision 3 to 5 cm long is most often hidden under the breast or within the areola. Other incisions are less commonly used to place an implant. An incision around the belly button or one in the axilla is well-hidden, but makes it more difficult for the surgeon to visualize the space to be created for the implant during surgery.

Women can also decide what type of implant they will have. Both silicone and saline are safe and soft, though silicone implants may feel more like the breast tissue you have. You can choose the size of the implant. Additionally, you can choose the shape of the implant, from one that is more flat for a more discrete augmentation, to one that is more pointy for breasts with more projection.

Patients with drooping breasts caused by aging, after pregnancy or after weight loss can opt to have breast lift surgery along with breast augmentation.

How Do I Know if Breast Augmentation is Right for Me?

There are lots of choices that your plastic surgeon can guide you through. At your consultation, we will review these choices and make careful measurements of your breasts so that we can achieve results that are both pleasing and natural. You will have an opportunity to try on a range of implant sizes, so do not wear a padded bra to your consultation. It is best to wear a bra without padding or a bra in your desired cup size for your fitting. Plan in advance to allow time to decide which breast implants are right for you and to complete your recovery.

After you have chosen your implant size and type, as well as a date for your procedure, the next step is a preoperative consultation. We will discuss the surgery in detail, verify your implant choice, complete the consent process, and take “before” photographs. A breast augmentation should look and feel natural. It will not necessarily be obvious that you have had your breast augmented.

What Type of Post-Operative Breast Augmentation Care Can I Expect?

The breast augmentation procedure generally takes one to one and a half hours and is an outpatient procedure. There will be soreness in the chest area and some minor swelling. Recovery typically lasts one to two weeks. You can expect mild to moderate pain that will be well controlled with oral pain medications. During your recovery period, you should avoid aerobic exercise and heavy lifting.
