Breast Reduction vs. Breast Lift: Determining What’s Right For You

Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa in Glen Burnie, MD
It almost goes without saying that breasts can play a big role in a woman’s self confidence. So when things aren’t looking their best, or at least, when you feel there is some room for improvement, rest assured that there are a variety of breast surgeries from which you can choose. Two of the most common and most popular are breast reduction and breast lift. But which of these is best for you? Allow us to help you decide.

What is a Breast Reduction?

As the name implies, a breast reduction is a surgery in which the breasts are decreased in size. For women who have back or shoulder pain due to the size of their breasts, or who struggle to comfortably find bras, this surgery can make a world of difference.

There are two different kinds of breast reductions that can be performed. A vertical pattern breast reduction results with less scarring, but lacks versatility. On the other hand, the wise pattern breast reduction may cause more scarring, but can often address a greater set of needs. Your doctor will help you determine the right amount of breast tissue to remove in order to reach your desired breast size.

What is a Breast Lift?

Unlike a breast reduction, a breast lift is primarily performed to lift sagging breasts. Breast sagging can result from having children, losing a considerable amount of weight, or a variety of other scenarios that cause the tissue to stretch and the skin elasticity to decrease. In most cases, you can tell that your breasts are sagging if the skin is lax and the nipples are beginning to point down.

During the procedure, incisions will be made around the nipple and along the bottom of the breast to tighten the skin and raise the height of the nipple to create the perky, youthful appearance you desire.

Which One Is Best For Me?

Ultimately, breast reductions and breast lifts address different physical concerns. However, the best way to determine which method will produce optimal results for your body is to speak with an experienced and trusted surgeon.

At Beaux Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Nia Banks has helped countless patients determine the procedures that are best suited to their bodies, so that they can achieve the figure of their dreams.
