How to Get the Most Out of Laser Hair Removal

After years of waxing and shaving, you may have grown tired of both and found yourself seeking laser hair removal to address your unwanted hair. While this option is highly effective, it is also an investment, and one that you will likely want to make worth the time and money involved. So, how can you get the most out of your laser hair removal, and encourage the effects to last in between sessions? Here is what we recommend:

Laser Hair Removal, Medspa, Dr. Banks, Beaux Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery, Washington DC

Wear SPF and Avoid Getting a Tan

Proper SPF should be an important part of your everyday skincare routine. However, this is especially true if you plan on undergoing laser hair removal, as wearing an SPF will prevent any tanning that could result in burns from the lasers, and prevent skin discoloration in the treatment area.

Do Not Remove Hair From the Root

Due to the fact that laser hair removal targets the follicle under the skin, it is important to refrain from tweezing or waxing unwanted hair in between treatments. Although it can be annoying to discover a few hairs that haven’t yet benefitted from the laser sessions, if you remove the root of the hair in between appointments, the laser treatments will not be as effective.

Shave Beforehand

One of the best ways to help the technician target the treatment area is to shave the day of your appointment. This stimulates the hair to enter into its active growth stage, allows the laser to more directly reach the follicle, and can shorten the length of your session.

Refrain from Strenuous Activities and Gently Exfoliate

For the first three days after your laser hair removal, it’s advised to avoid strenuous sports or very hot water, such as that in hot tubs. You may also want to gently exfoliate the treatment area to encourage any lingering hair follicles that were targeted by the treatment to release and prevent ingrown hairs.
