How to Talk to Your Partner About Cosmetic Surgery

Winter Skincare TipsOnce you’ve made the decision to undergo plastic surgery – and achieve the appearance you’ve always wanted – you may be chomping at the bit to sign the dotted line.  Yet if you’re married, you’ll often find that you need to get your partner on board before you can make this decision, as it can be a big one for him to.

There are many reasons why you should get your spouse’s O.K. before undergoing plastic surgery, including the following:

  • Some surgical procedures require significant downtime and recovery, in which case your partner will need to take over your responsibilities. If you don’t make this decision with your partner, he might be angry at the additional burdens.
  • While plastic surgery is safe, it still carries significant risks. Your partner should be informed of these risks before you decide to undergo surgery.
  • Whether you share a single income or come from a two-income family, surgery can still be a major financial decision. You probably wouldn’t be too happy if your partner bought a luxury car without your knowledge; the same rule of thumb can be applied to plastic surgery.

If you want your partner on-board with your desire to undergo plastic surgery, you may need to talk to him about the following:

  • Outline the details of why you’d like this plastic surgery. For example, if you want to get liposuction, tell him that you’ve tried diet and exercise, but your body just isn’t responding to it.  Chances are he knows you’ve been trying, so he’ll understand.
  • Show your partner why your hormones might be making it difficult for you to lose weight, improve your skin, etc. There are significant hormonal differences between men and women – and if you show him those differences, he may understand why professional help could be necessary!
  • Discuss the toll pregnancy can take on your body. Regardless of a woman’s size or shape their bodies go through massive transformations during pregnancy. Carrying a baby will inevitably lead to stretched skin, stretched abdominal muscles, and even stretch marks.
  • Present him with the total cost of the procedure. Don’t try to sugarcoat it, as it might make him angry to see the price change once you’ve already undergone the procedure.
  • Bring him with you to your consultation! This gives him the chance to ask the plastic surgeon any questions he might have about making sure you’re as safe as possible.
