Traditionally, laser hair removal has only been recommended for those with light skin and dark hair. The lasers used would search out and target the dark pigment, so they could easily get confused when trying to treat someone with darker skin.
In our Lanham, MD office, we are happy to announce that these restrictions are outdated. Thanks to new laser technology, all Dr. Banks needs is a consultation with the patient and she can assess which laser will work best. Read on to learn more about the different lasers available at Beaux Arts.
NdYAG Laser: For Darker Complexions
Finally, there is a laser on the market that works safely on darker skin types. The NdYAG laser, which can also be used for certain skin rejuvenation procedures, is able to distinguish the subtleties of pigmentation, making it effective at removing hair on any skin tone. Due to the longer beams of this laser, fewer pulses are needed to get the job done. This results in a faster, more streamlined hair removal session.
Alexandrite Laser: For Brown or Red Hair on Lighter Skin
The Alexandrite laser also produces a longer beam, making the treatment process a little quicker than traditional hair removal sessions. While this laser is well suited for a variety of skin types, it still works best on those with darker hair and lighter skin. The Alexandrite laser is particularly effective on coarser hair but is also known to detect the fine hairs that often evade other lasers.
IPL Laser: For Darker Hair on Light Skin
IPL (Intense Pulsating Light) hair removal treatment involves a light system that targets pigment and uses heat to damage the follicles to prevent hair re-growth. Because the IPL sends out scattered wavelengths of light, it will target any pigment that gets in its way. For this reason, IPL is best suited for those with fair skin and darker hair.
