Liposuction Vs. A Tummy Tuck: Which Option is Right for You?

lipo vs tummy tuckNo matter what beauty trends might come and go, one thing remains the same: a tight and toned tummy is one of the most desirable areas of the body.  It’s why so many people devote hours of sweat at the gym, cut down on their portions, and perform hundreds of crunches, all in the hopes of banishing away stomach fat to reveal toned abs.

However, not everyone finds it easy to lose stomach fat, despite the healthiest of diets and rigid exercise regimens.  Genetics can make it difficult for many individuals to cut down on their stomach fat; age and sedentary work habits can also contribute to tummy pooches.  With so many factors to consider, it’s no wonder why many people often consider surgical solutions in the form of liposuction or tummy tucks.

But which option is right for you?

At Beaux Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery in Lanham, MD (also serving the greater Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC areas), Nia Banks, a board-certified plastic surgeon, provides her patients with all the information they need to choose the best stomach reduction operation.  To determine whether you would benefit from a liposuction procedure or a tummy tuck, take a look at the following criteria:

Laser liposuction is ideal for patients who may have smaller fat deposits on their bodies and are unable to get rid of it through diet and exercise.  Laser liposuction is ideal for body contouring.  Patients who have fatty deposits around the arms, neck, back, knees, breasts, and stomach can also use laser liposuction.  There is minimal downtime involved with this procedure, and patients only need to take a few days off of work.

A tummy tuck, or an abdominoplasty, is a procedure that surgically removes excess skin and fat.  The entire abdominal wall is lifted, pulled-down and redraped to maximize the amount of skin removed.  The lining (fascia) of the abdominal wall muscles is plicated, or tightened.  A full abdominoplasty will take care of excess skin and tighten the abdominal wall above and below the belly button.   This helps to flatten the tummy and redefine the waist.

A mini tummy tuck is appropriate for patients who have excess skin and abdominal wall laxity that’s restricted to the area below the belly button.  Patient selection is key when deciding between a mini tummy tuck and a full tummy tuck as very few women are good candidates for a mini tummy tuck.  During your consultation, Dr. Banks will determine whether you would best benefit from a tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck.
