Neck Lipo vs. Kybella – Which One Should You Choose?

Neck-Lipo-vs-Kybella-Which-One-Should-You-Choose-Dr-Nia-Banks-Lanham-MDOver the past ten months, you may have noticed that a particular buzzword has been dominating the plastic surgery world: Kybella.  This new FDA-approved treatment is an injection that dissolves chin fat over time, leaving the jawline looking smooth and sleek. Kybella has opened up the playing field for patients who may be concerned about the appearance of their neck and/or jawline.

But should you hop on board the Kybella train – or is traditional neck lipo still the best option for patients with excessive chin and neck fat?

The Answer Might Surprise You

If neck and chin fat is a big concern for you, traditional neck liposuction might be the best option for you.  While Kybella could be more convenient, neck liposuction is still far more precise than the injection.  What’s more, Kybella is only approved for the treatment of submental chin fat – nothing else.  This limitation could present a problem for patients who want to contour their entire jawline, as well as remove neck fat.

Additionally, neck liposuction can be combined with skin-tightening treatments, leading to a more natural and youthful-looking appearance.  Laser liposuction procedures can simultaneously remove fat from the jawline and neck area, as well as invigorate collagen production for long-term skin tightening.  Kybella, unfortunately, has no impact on drooping skin, which could still leave patients looking as though they have a double chin.

For patients who truly want the most precise procedure, neck liposuction is still the superior choice over Kybella.

What to Expect From Neck Liposuction

During a neck liposuction, your plastic surgeon will make incisions behind your ears and underneath your chin, which helps minimize the appearance of surgery scars.  The surgeon will pull the neck muscles and skin taut, creating a slimmer and smoother appearance.  Once the muscles have been repositioned, the surgeon will stitch them in place and remove any excess skin.
