Delayed Breast Reconstruction in Washington, D.C.

Women who undergo surgery as a treatment for breast cancer often decide to pursue a breast reconstruction procedure at some point in the future. Whether this is immediately following their initial surgery, or delayed by months or years, it can help a woman restore her sense of wholeness. Dr. Nia Banks of Beaux Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery is proud to offer delayed breast reconstruction treatments to patients living in Washington, D.C., Lanham, Columbia and the surrounding areas of Maryland.

What is Delayed Breast Reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction is a procedure designed to restore a woman’s breasts after a mastectomy or related surgery, which is often required during breast cancer treatment. Patients may not pursue breast reconstruction immediately following their initial surgery for a number of reasons. Whether patients wait months or even years to pursue a breast reconstruction, they can still achieve beautiful results from the procedure. Delayed breast reconstruction is simply a breast reconstruction procedure that is performed at a later date than a patient’s initial mastectomy or lumpectomy.

How Much Does Delayed Breast Reconstruction Cost in Washington, D.C.?

Each breast reconstruction procedure requires a unique approach depending on the patient’s treatment goals. As such, the cost of this procedure can vary from patient to patient. However, since a breast reconstruction is generally performed following a mastectomy due to breast cancer, the procedure will be covered by your insurance. To learn more about the cost of your breast reconstruction or the financing options we offer, call us today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Nia Banks.

What are the Benefits of a Delayed Breast Reconstruction?

Patients typically pursue breast reconstruction procedures to restore their sense of wholeness. This eliminates the need for prostheses and allows you to feel more like yourself.  Additionally, breast reconstruction can improve nipple sensation and reduce scarring that remains from previous surgeries. Women who undergo breast reconstruction often experience an improved quality of life and a boost in confidence after their procedure.

How is a Delayed Breast Reconstruction Performed?

Breast reconstruction can be performed using several different techniques, depending on the patient’s treatment goals. We customize the treatment for each patient so that they can achieve the unique results that they desire. For most procedures, we use tissue from other areas of the body, such as the belly, thigh, or buttocks, to restore a natural volume to the breasts. Using a flap technique, we are able to take this tissue, which includes fat, muscle and blood vessels, and reconstruct the shape of the breast. Women who require a more significant increase in breast volume may also consider breast implants for a natural look and feel. We also reconstruct the nipple during the procedure. Breast reconstruction can be performed in one surgery or slowly over multiple office visits depending on your preference.

How Much Downtime Can I Expect After My Breast Reconstruction Treatment?

The recovery following a breast reconstruction treatment will largely depend on the techniques involved in your surgery. Recovery can last between a few weeks and a few months. During this time, you will need to take time off of work, exercise and other activities. In most cases, you will wear bandages for several weeks to encourage proper healing in the treatment area. You can also expect to have follow-up visits with Dr. Banks until you are fully recovered.

Patient Testimonial:

I Have a Story to tell! I am a breast cancer SURVIVOR !  I at last can claim this title Thankfully to Dr. Nia Banks.  Dr Banks always knew she would one day fix what was broken January, 2010 when she performed surgery on me to remove my right breast and eighteen lymph nodes that was intoxicated with CANCER, which allowed me to Live!  Because of the intense stage “3” of cancer Dr Banks removed the left Breast after I completed the brutal chemo and radiation treatments to make sure this violent disease was removed from my body.  She assured and comforted me to know that when I was ready she would perform reconstructive surgery and she would ensure I would be ok with the procedure she would perform.  Because I wanted to live and was scared  of surgery I did not entertain the thought of surgery.  After loosing my husband Christmas Day December 25, 2014 to cancer and overcoming the pain of his death I called Dr. Banks June 2018 because I needed to feel like a woman. As she had explained to me eight years before she welcomed me and erased all concerns/hesitation of reconstruction surgery by performing this surgery on me August, 2018.  I was amazed that the surgery was not complicated nor painful and I healed just as she advised me in a medical shirt period of time.   I Thank Dr Nia Banks for allowing me to feel like a woman again and not feel ashamed of my body because she did a beautiful job on my new breasts which has allowed me to feel like a BEAUTIFUL Woman!

Thank You Dr Banks💞
