What is Male Breast Reduction?

More than 65 percent of all male breast disorders are a result of gynecomastia, or localized fat and/or excess glandular tissue in the breasts. And often times, this is a big source of embarrassment and humiliation for men. Fortunately, a male breast reduction can remove the excess tissue, reconstruct the contour of the chest, and restore your self-confidence immediately.

How is a Male Breast Reduction Performed?

Male breast reduction surgery involves both surgery and liposuction procedures, depending on the type of tissue that needs to be removed. If your breasts consist mostly of excess glandular tissue, for example, Dr. Banks will cut the tissue out with a scalpel. If it’s mostly fatty tissue, on the other hand, she will use liposuction instead.

Dr. Banks will begin with an incision on the edge of the nipple or in the underarm area, cutting excess fat, tissue and skin away. Once the surgery is complete, she will cover the incision site with a dressing and apply a chest wrap to keep skin in place.

How Do I Know if a Male Breast Reduction is Right for Me?

The best candidates for male breast reduction are those who have a stable body weight, fairly elastic skin, and who want to get rid of the excess fatty tissue around their breasts. If you’re overweight or obese, you should make every effort to lose weight with diet and exercise before resorting to surgery. Sometimes, enlarged breasts are caused by taking certain medications, steroids or drugs. If that is the case, you’ll want to discuss that with your surgeon prior to the procedure, as you may not be a good candidate for male breast reduction.

What Type of Post-Operative Male Breast Reduction Care Can I Expect?

Swelling and some discomfort are common following your male breast reduction procedure, but this can be controlled with pain medication prescribed by your doctor. You will also have to wear an elastic pressure garment for up to two weeks to help reduce swelling. Stitches will be removed at the two-week mark as well.

After surgery, you are encouraged to walk around immediately and you’ll be able to return to work within a few days. However, refrain from any strenuous exercise, sexual activity or anything else that may risk a blow to the chest for a few weeks.
