Post-Recovery of Rhinoplasty

Post Rhinoplasty, Dr. Banks, Beaux Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery, Baltimore, MDA nose surgery, or Rhinoplasty, can be performed to improve the symmetry of a face, reduce a nose’s prominence, or help widen the nasal passages to improve breathing functions. Although this plastic surgery offers these benefits, it’s equally important for a patient to care for their nose in recovery so that they can achieve their goals and move on happily with their improved nose. Post-surgery, most patients plan to take a week or two off from their normal lives. In this time it’s important for the patient to avoid strenuous activities that may place their nose in danger or harm or injury. Following rhinoplasty surgery, the patient will be administered a nasal splint and packing while they are still asleep. Once they wake up they can return home.

Patients may experience dull aching, headaches, and congestion/ swelling within the first few days and nights. Because of this sleeping can be difficult and patients may be administered pain medication or a slight sleeping aid to help. After a few  days have passed the packing will be removed, but the nasal splint will remain in place for a week or two until it’s removed by the performing doctor. Patients who had major breathing problems before surgery may notice an immediate improvement after surgery, even with swelling. However, others may take more time to notice the positive changes. Patients also experience dryness and crusting around the nose which saline spray and ointment can aid in resolving, a patient should avoid blowing their nose until the doctor gives permission.

After about 2 to 3 weeks most of the swelling should be gone and patients reportedly can begin to appreciate the changes. It’s reported that the nose can fill a little numb post-surgery, and it can take anywhere from several weeks to months for the feeling to return completely. People report smiling can feel strange along with talking. In the months after this face surgery, your nose may run more easily, and nasal allergies can either improve or worsen. Depending if you have a revision procedure it can take up to 2 years to see the full results, and each one can slow down the recovery. An ideal candidate for rhinoplasty has reasonable expectations on the outcome of the procedure and has good mental health.
